Summary in English
Mridu is a young girl, who lived with her grandfather in
Chennai. Thatha and grandmother Tapi. Once in the afternoon Mridu accompanied
by Tapi goes to her aunt Rukku Manni's house. There she meets her
cousins-sisters Lalli, Ravi and Meena. Everyone was happy to see Mridu at Rukku
Manni's house. Ravi took Mridu to the backyard of the house, where there were
thick bushes of a bitter berry. There was a little cat inside a torn football.
The little creature was busy drinking milk, which was kept in the half-shell of
a coconut.
Meena told Mridu that she had found this cat outside the
house in the morning, but those people had to keep this secret, otherwise Dadi
would have left the house immediately. Ravi was sad that elders teach him to
show kindness to animals, but when he wanted to do so, elders shouted at him
and called the cat a dirty animal. His grandmother got suspicious only when he
was taking milk for the cat from the kitchen. To make him believe that he was
taking the milk for himself, he had to drink more than half the milk himself.
He tells Mridu that they have named the cat as Mahendran.
Mridu liked this name very much, as it sounded real and was completely
different from the cute names people used to have for such animals. Ravi
further told that its full name is Mahendra Verma Pallava Poonai, which will be
called MP Poonai in short. Ravi tells Mridu that how did he give it this name?
He told that from its fur it can be said that it is a fine breed of cat and is
a close relative of the lion family. This lion is similar to what the kings of
the Pallava dynasty used to wear as their symbol. Mridu laughed at this, so
Ravi got a little agitated and had to prove his knowledge of history.
Ravi was just making important announcements about his cat
when he heard a strange sound 'Kreech'. This sound came from the window side
and Mridu was scared and Mahendran was also scared. Out of fear, Mahendran
jumped up and climbed on a plate in which red chillies were kept to dry in the
sun. As the sound of 'Kreech' continues, Mridu asks what is it? Ravi tells her
that Lalli is learning to play the violin and this sound is coming from there.
Mridu peeped through the window and found that Lalli was holding the violin
awkwardly and she was sitting a short distance away from her music teacher,
whose back was facing the window.
There were only a few black hairs left on the teacher's
head, which were oiled and they were long till the ears. There was a gold
necklace around the neck and a ring in the finger of the hand. His toe was big
and he was slamming it slowly on the ground. The teacher was playing smoothly
on the violin, while Lalli struggled to play the tune. Teacher's songs were
full of melody and Lalli could not play the tune every time. When he visited
Mahabalipuram on behalf of his school, he saw a statue of a lion and was quite
sure that he was one of the cat's ancestors. He proudly declared that his cat
was a descendant of the sage-cat of Mahabalipuram. He told Mridu that the cat
was worshiped in ancient Egypt. He believed that it was a descendant of Bastet,
the cat goddess.
The children were having fun peeping through the window when
the mother called Ravi and asked the beggar to drive away. She was now fed up
with the beggar coming to her house every week and that is why she wanted the
beggar to find another home. The beggar went to the garden and sat comfortably.
He was sitting on the support of a neem tree, he had laid his clothes in it, he
was about to take a nap when he heard Ravi asking him to leave from there. He
was surprised to hear this and wanted to meet the mistress of the house at the
same time. An irritated Rukku Manni told Ravi that there was nothing to eat in
the kitchen and asked the beggar never to come here again.
His voice was so loud that Ravi did not need to utter those
words to the beggar. The beggar told them that he would take some rest at this
place and then leave from there. It is very hot outside and he has blisters on
his feet. Seeing all this the child felt very sorry and they decided to gift
him a pair of slippers.
Mridu noticed that when she came to Ravi's house, she saw a
pair of old brown coloured slippers outside the house. He asked Ravi that whose
slippers are these? Ravi picked up those slippers and gave them to the beggar
and asked him not to come here again. The beggar went from there wearing
slippers, blessing those children. Now it was time for the music teacher to
leave. He was looking for his slippers. They called Lalli and together they all
started looking for his slippers, but the slippers were nowhere to be found.
When Lalli told Rukku Manni, he asked the children if they saw anyone from here
picking up the slippers.
Rukku Manni was getting angry, so Mridu could not stop
anymore. She told her that they had given the chappals of the music teacher to
that beggar. Rukku Manni went inside and brought Gopu Mama's new slippers and
gave it to the music teacher. The music teacher was delighted to receive the
slippers, but he pretended as though it was not acceptable to him.
The teacher called Ravi a monkey, a replica of Lord Hanuman,
so that it was clear that Rukku Manni did not like it, she asked the teacher to
leave immediately.
When he left, she invited the children inside the house and
gave them some snacks to eat. She thanked God that Gopu Mama does not go to
office wearing slippers, but he needs it after returning from office. she had
no idea what she would tell him and decided to take charge of the incident on herself.

मृदु एक युवा लड़की है, जो चेन्नई में अपने दादा के साथ रहती थी। थाथा और दादी तापी। दोपहर में एक बार मृदु तापी के साथ अपनी मौसी रुक्कू मन्नी के घर जाती है। वहां उसकी मुलाकात अपनी चचेरी बहनें लल्ली, रवि और मीना से होती है। रुक्कू मन्नी के घर मृदु को देखकर सभी खुश हो गए। रवि मृदु को घर के पिछवाड़े में ले गया, जहाँ एक कड़वे बेर की मोटी झाड़ियाँ थीं। फटे फुटबॉल के अंदर एक छोटी सी बिल्ली थी। नन्हा जीव दूध पीने में व्यस्त था, जिसे एक नारियल के आधे खोल में रखा गया था।
मीना ने मृदु से कहा कि उसे यह बिल्ली सुबह घर के बाहर मिली थी, लेकिन उन लोगों को यह राज रखना था, नहीं तो दादी तुरंत घर से निकल जाती। रवि इस बात से दुखी था कि बड़े उसे जानवरों पर दया करना सिखाते हैं, लेकिन जब उसने ऐसा करना चाहा, तो बड़ों ने उस पर चिल्लाया और बिल्ली को गंदा जानवर कहा। उसकी दादी को तभी शक हुआ जब वह किचन से बिल्ली के लिए दूध ले जा रहा था। उसे यह विश्वास दिलाने के लिए कि वह दूध अपने लिए ले रहा है, उसे आधा से अधिक दूध स्वयं पीना पड़ा।
वह मृदु से कहता है कि उन्होंने बिल्ली का नाम महेंद्रन रखा है। मृदु को यह नाम बहुत पसंद आया, क्योंकि यह वास्तविक लग रहा था और ऐसे जानवरों के लिए लोगों द्वारा इस्तेमाल किए जाने वाले प्यारे नामों से बिल्कुल अलग था। रवि ने आगे बताया कि इसका पूरा नाम महेंद्र वर्मा पल्लव पूनई है, जिसे संक्षेप में एमपी पूनई कहा जाएगा। रवि मृदु से कहता है कि उसने इसे यह नाम कैसे दिया? उन्होंने बताया कि इसके फर से यह कहा जा सकता है कि यह बिल्ली की एक अच्छी नस्ल है और शेर परिवार की करीबी रिश्तेदार है। यह सिंह वैसा ही है जैसा पल्लव वंश के राजा अपने प्रतीक के रूप में पहनते थे। इस पर मृदु हंस पड़ी, इसलिए रवि थोड़ा उत्तेजित हो गया और उसे इतिहास के अपने ज्ञान को साबित करना पड़ा।

शिक्षिका के सिर पर थोड़े से काले बाल ही बचे थे, जिन पर तेल लगा हुआ था और वे कानों तक लंबे थे। गले में सोने का हार और हाथ की अंगुली में अंगूठी थी। उसका पैर का अंगूठा बड़ा था और वह उसे धीरे-धीरे जमीन पर पटक रहा था। शिक्षिका वायलिन बजा रही थी, जबकि लल्ली धुन बजाने के लिए संघर्ष कर रही थी। शिक्षक के गीत माधुर्य से भरे हुए थे और लल्ली हर बार धुन नहीं बजा सकती थी। जब उन्होंने अपने स्कूल की ओर से महाबलीपुरम का दौरा किया, तो उन्होंने एक शेर की मूर्ति देखी और उन्हें पूरा यकीन था कि वह बिल्ली के पूर्वजों में से एक थे। उन्होंने गर्व से घोषणा की कि उनकी बिल्ली महाबलीपुरम के ऋषि-बिल्ली की वंशज थी। उसने मृदु को बताया कि प्राचीन मिस्र में बिल्ली की पूजा की जाती थी। उनका मानना था कि यह बिल्ली देवी, बासेट का वंशज था।
बच्चे खिड़की से झाँकने में मजे ले रहे थे तभी माँ ने रवि को बुलाया और भिखारी को भगाने के लिए कहा। वह अब हर हफ्ते उसके घर आने वाले भिखारी से तंग आ चुकी थी और इसीलिए वह चाहती थी कि भिखारी दूसरा घर ढूंढे। भिखारी बगीचे में गया और आराम से बैठ गया। वह एक नीम के पेड़ के सहारे बैठा था, उसमें उसने अपने कपड़े रखे थे, वह झपकी लेने ही वाला था कि रवि ने उसे वहाँ से जाने के लिए कहते सुना। यह सुनकर वह हैरान रह गया और उसी समय घर की मालकिन से मिलना चाहता था। चिढ़कर रूक्कू मन्नी ने रवि से कहा कि रसोई में खाने के लिए कुछ नहीं है और भिखारी को फिर कभी यहाँ न आने के लिए कहा।
उसकी आवाज इतनी तेज थी कि रवि को भिखारी से ये शब्द कहने की जरूरत ही नहीं पड़ी। भिखारी ने उनसे कहा कि वह इस स्थान पर थोड़ा विश्राम करेगा और फिर वहाँ से चला जाएगा। बाहर बहुत गर्मी है और उसके पैरों में छाले पड़ गए हैं। यह सब देखकर बच्चे को बहुत अफ़सोस हुआ और उन्होंने उसे एक जोड़ी चप्पल उपहार में देने का फैसला किया।
मृदु ने देखा कि जब वह रवि के घर आई तो उसे घर के बाहर एक जोड़ी पुराने भूरे रंग की चप्पल दिखाई दी। उन्होंने रवि से पूछा कि ये किसकी चप्पल हैं? रवि ने उन चप्पलों को उठाकर भिखारी को दे दिया और उसे फिर से यहाँ न आने के लिए कहा। भिखारी वहाँ से चप्पल पहन कर उन बच्चों को आशीर्वाद देता हुआ चला गया। अब संगीत शिक्षक के जाने का समय हो गया था। वह अपनी चप्पल ढूंढ रहा था। उन्होंने लल्ली को बुलाया और सब मिलकर उसकी चप्पलों की तलाश करने लगे, लेकिन चप्पल कहीं नहीं मिली। लल्ली ने रुक्कू मन्नी को बताया तो उसने बच्चों से पूछा कि क्या उन्होंने यहां से किसी को चप्पल उठाते देखा है।
रूक्कू मन्नी को गुस्सा आ रहा था, इसलिए मृदु अब और नहीं रुक सकती थी। उसने उससे कहा कि उन्होंने उस भिखारी को संगीत शिक्षक की चप्पलें दी हैं। रूक्कू मन्नी अंदर गई और गोपू मामा की नई चप्पल लाकर संगीत शिक्षक को दे दी। संगीत शिक्षक चप्पल पाकर प्रसन्न हुआ, लेकिन उसने ऐसा दिखावा किया जैसे कि यह उसे स्वीकार्य नहीं है।
शिक्षक ने रवि को एक बंदर, भगवान हनुमान की प्रतिकृति कहा, ताकि यह स्पष्ट हो कि रुक्कू मन्नी को यह पसंद नहीं आया, उसने शिक्षक को तुरंत जाने के लिए कहा।
जब वह चला गया, तो उसने बच्चों को घर के अंदर आमंत्रित किया और उन्हें खाने के लिए कुछ नाश्ता दिया। उसने भगवान का शुक्रिया अदा किया कि गोपू मामा चप्पल पहनकर ऑफिस नहीं जाते, लेकिन ऑफिस से लौटने के बाद उन्हें इसकी जरूरत होती है। उसे नहीं पता था कि वह उसे क्या बताएगी और इस घटना की जिम्मेदारी खुद लेने का फैसला किया।
