Summary in English
The author had known the
shoemaker for many years, as he also made shoes for his father. Mr. Gessler
lived with his older brother in his shop in London. The shop had no other
identity, only it was known as the Gessler brothers. They used to make shoes
only after getting orders. Once a writer asked Mr. Gessler if he didn't mind
making shoes for different sizes of feet. The man replied in a heavy German
accent that it was an art.
Most of the time Mr. Gessler was
engaged in shoe making and did not talk much to his customers. He was fond of
everything he used to work with him. The shoes made by the Gessler brothers
were very strong and lasted a very long time. Once upon a time the author's
experience had turned a little the opposite. He complained about this to Mr.
Gessler. On this the old man promised the writer that he would repair the shoes
and if it did not happen, he would return the full money to the writer.
Once, while ordering a shoe to be made, the author was a little lost, the shoes the author was wearing at that time, he had bought it from a big shop in a hurry. Mr. Gessler looked at the shoe carefully and pressed a little on the spot where the shoe was pricking. With a sad face, he said that sometimes the customers suffer, yet the big companies do not know the value of their self-esteem. They lure customers with advertising rather than their work. Because of these reasons people like Mr. Gessler were losing their business. The author had heard these things for the first time and felt so sorry for Mr. Gessler that he had ordered several pairs of shoes to be made at the same time. After several months the writer went to his shop again, but was deceived by mistaking Mr. Gessler as his brother. After some time he came to know that the elder brother is no longer in this world. He again ordered several pairs of shoes and shortly thereafter set out to go abroad. After returning from there, he made his choice. went to the shoe store again. This time Mr. Gessler looked a bit older. Only a year had passed, but it seemed as if he had completed a decade.
Mr Gessler did not recognize the
author. The author placed his order as usual and this time the shoes were much
better than before. One evening the writer went to personally thank Mr.
Gessler, but no name plates were seen outside the shop. Inside was a white man.
The white man told them that Mr. Gessler was dead and that they had acquired
the shop. The white man went on to say that Mr. Gessler died of hunger.
He had always made all the shoes himself and never allowed anyone to touch him. Always used best quality goods and worked hard day and night to fulfil orders on time. He used to make the best shoes in London, yet he lost the competition. Whatever they earned was used to pay the rent of the shop and buy good quality leather. They also left their meals to complete the work so that the pair of shoes could be prepared on time.
