The Shed Summary English and Hindi 

Stanza-1

There’s a shed at the bottom of our garden 

With a spider’s web hanging across the door, 

The hinges are rusty and creak in the wind. 

When I’m in bed I lie and I listen, 

I’ll open that door one day.

कवि के घर में बगीचे के अंत में एक शेड है। शेड के दरवाजे पर मकड़ी का जाला है। दरवाजे के जोड़ों में जंग लग जाता है और जब हवा चलती है, तो वे कर्कश ध्वनि उत्पन्न करते हैं। रात को जब कवि सो जाता है तो कर्कश ध्वनि सुनाई देती है। कवि एक दिन शेड का दरवाजा खोलकर अंदर देखना चाहता है।

Stanza-2

There’s a dusty old window around at the side 

With three cracked panes of glass, 

I often think there’s someone staring at me 

Each time that I pass, 

I’ll peep through that window one day.

शेड के किनारे एक खिड़की है। यह धूल से भरा है। खिड़की के शीशे कांच के बने होते हैं जिनमें दरारें होती हैं। कवि को लगता है कि जब भी वह शेड को पार करता है, तो कोई उसे खिड़की के शीशे से देख रहा होता है। एक दिन कवि खिड़की के अंदर देखेगा कि शेड के अंदर क्या है।

Stanza-3

My brother says there’s a ghost in the shed 

Who hides under the rotten floorboards, 

And if I ever dare to set foot inside 

He’ll jump out and chop off my head, 

But I’ll take a peek one day.

कवि के भाई का कहना है कि शेड पर भूत का साया है और यह शेड के खराब पड़े लकड़ी के फर्श के नीचे छिपा रहता है। वह कवि को यह कहकर डराता है कि अगर उसने शेड में प्रवेश करने का साहस जुटाया, तो भूत बाहर कूद जाएगा और उसका सिर काट देगा। इसके बावजूद कवि ने एक दिन शेड के अंदर झाँकने की योजना बनाई।

Stanza-4

I know that there isn’t really a ghost, 

My brother tells lies to keep the shed for his den; 

There isn’t anyone staring or making strange noises 

And the spider has been gone from his web 

since I don’t know when, 

I’ll go into that shed one day soon, 

 

But not just yet… 

 

कवि जानता है कि शेड में कोई भूत नहीं है। उसका भाई झूठ बोलता है ताकि शेड उसका अपना ठिकाना बन सके। शेड में कोई नहीं है जो कवि को घूरता है या अजीब शोर करता है। कवि कहता है कि मकड़ी का जाला भी बहुत पुराना है और मकड़ी उसे छोड़कर बहुत पहले चली गई। वह आगे कहते हैं कि उनकी एक दिन शेड का दौरा करने की योजना है, लेकिन उसी क्षण नहीं।
